SHOPPING
Pansy plants should be compact and
dark green. Avoid faded, stretched-
out plants, even if they are cheap. Buy
early September or October because
plants established later than this may
not flower successfully. If you intend
filling a large patch of ground, seeds
might be a better idea.
GROWING
Pansies are undemanding annuals,
rarely experiencing pest or disease
problems. They’ll thrive in average
garden soil with full sun and ample
moisture. To ensure consistent
flowering, use an organic manure to
nourish the soil and remove spent
flowers, above. Another chemical
fertilizer is NPK solution—it enriches
the soil with nitrogen, potassium, and
phosphorus. ©
